IMPORTANT: CHANGE TO FEES POLICY

With effect from this coming weekend, the BAFRA Board has decided to revert to our previous policy regarding fees for associate officials (i.e. those with less than 10 games experience).

The associate official will still receive a payment of £25, but the £15 difference can now be retained by game management (rather than paid to BAFRA). Where a larger than normal crew is assigned, the fees should be adjusted pro rata, as in previous years.

BAFA EXPANDS BOARD

BAFA has expanded its Board from 4 members to 10. Each of the existing member organisations (BAFRA, BAFCA and BAFL) will be asked to appoint a second director. Two directors will represent BUAFL. In addition, Gary Marshall's reappointment as Chairman now gives him a full vote on the Board, and Charles Macnamara has been appointed as Vice Chairman.

The BAFRA Board has nominated Davie Parsons to join me as BAFRA's second BAFA director.

The workload of the directors has been rising for some time. Bringing in new blood to the Board will enable BAFA to move forward on more fronts simultaneously and also spread the load of existing projects. This expansion is an interim step - BAFA will be consulting this summer to establish a way forward for the long-term. The Board has committed to working towards a single organisation structure by 2013.

More details at http://www.bafa.org.uk . If anyone has any questions about this or other aspects of BAFA's work, please feel free to contact me.

BAFCA SPEAKER

BAFRA has been invited to provide a speaker for the BAFCA Convention on the weekend of 4th/5th July. Unfortunately, none of the directors is available that weekend and neither are some other people we've approached. We're looking for someone amusing and/or inspiring to represent us. Interested? Let me know.

DIRECTORS AWAY

Paul Sutton and Andrew Lovell are both on holiday this week. Charlie Dean-Young and Craig Urin are filling in for Andrew. Paul will be back at the weekend.

In addition, Steve Tonkinson is currently ill and recuperating, while Pete Johnson's family and work commitments have got a bit worse. He and Phil have been working to get the schedules out earlier, but this is still proving problematic. Please remain patient and once again we apologise for any inconvenience caused.

30-SECOND TIMEOUT

We note that at least one head coach is in the habit of requesting a 30-second timeout. (Check the rulebook if you can't remember how he does this!)

The duration of a 30-second timeout, under Rule 3-3-7-c, is a maximum of 60 seconds. This is 30 seconds for the timeout (shorter if both teams are ready), 5 seconds for the referee to notify both teams, and then (up to) 25 seconds on the play clock.

PLAUDITS

Bolton Bulldogs vs. Sheffield Tomahawks

Great youth game, filled with excitement, turnovers, tension and a equalising score in the final minute of play. Players, coaches and game management were of the highest standard and the level of competition was extremely encouraging.

Merseyside Nighthawks vs. Doncaster Mustangs

Non-stop action for a 3hr 25 minute game (our second of the day) in hot conditions - played at a fast pace despite the heat. Tempers frayed a few times, and the pendulum swung both ways, finally ending in a Doncaster victory. A hard-fought game with handshakes at the end. Thanks to the Nighthawks for the post-game hospitality - well appreciated by officials and away team alike.

Mike Cavanagh #465

New this week

Bolton Bulldogs (Youth)

Game declared a "no posts" game upon agreement with both coaches. Chain set was made of extending poles that sometimes did and sometimes did not extend.

Two members of chain crew below required age (14) – therefore, we arranged to have them supervised by a responsible adult opposite the press box.

Game suspended for 15 minutes in the third quarter to treat a neck injury to Sheffield Tomahawks player on the field.

Leeds Varsity Rams (Youth)

Chain Set very old and in need of repair. Down box and stakes not padded.

Game balls supplied by visiting team due to illegality of Leeds’s balls.

Kickoff delayed 15 minutes due to lateness of chain crew and ball persons.

The game was played in an excellent spirit of sportsmanship by both teams.

Chris Jarvis #10

07/06/09 vs Bolton Bulldogs

London Olympians

Game played at Warren Avenue Playing Fields in Bromley due to unavailability of Crystal Palace. The crew was not informed in advance. Kickoff delayed 15 minutes while we travelled to the alternate venue.

NFL hashmarks in yellow, very short uprights, lines only every 10 yards. Team areas very small. No lines outside the sidelines. Yardage markers placed too close to sideline, had to be moved back.  No separate changing room.

This game is not indicative of the Olympians' general or usual standard of game management.

Alan Dobson #308

21/06/09 vs Maidstone Pumas

Loughborough Aces (BUAFL)

Game was played in good spirits by both teams and was a pleasure to officiate.

Hull Hornets

Very faint blue lines. Home Team area marked from 15 yd to 15 yd lines. Only one set of goal posts; played with goal posts by rule.

Down Box only 4 feet tall.

100 yd Pitch shortened 10yds as newly drilled hole for non-existent goal posts were a trip hazard.

Only 2 members of the crew paid (one in cash & one by cheque) as the 2nd signatory had been called away.

Plaudits to both Teams for a game played in excellent spirits and congratulations to the Wildcats for scoring their first ever points!

Chris Jarvis #10

Both end zones 7yds deep. Some hashmarks (especially at the upper end of the field) were not 1yd apart.
On one side of the field the coaching box line was 6ft from the sideline; on the other it was 9ft. Neither side had a team area line.
Yardage markers originally pegged to the ground 6ft out of bounds, were moved back to 12ft on request to game management.
Changing room not lockable.
Officials assistants provided only 5-10 minutes before kick off.

Jim Briggs #31

14/06/09 vs Sussex Thunder

Doncaster Mustangs

Owing to work by the groundsman in the days previous to the game it had not been possible to mark out the hashmarks either at the inbounds or sidelines. In the end this did not prove as big a problem as was first anticipated. Plaudits to both teams for an excellent, hard hitting game played for the most part in a very good spirit.

Tim Vickers #129

14/06/09 vs West Coast Trojans

East Kent Mavericks

The changing rooms were not lockable. Two members of the chain crew were changed at half time.
