CONVENTION COUNTDOWN
BAFRA Annual Convention – Sat 19th and Sun 20th March 2011
Let’s Get Registered
If you are not taking advantage of the excellent accommodation rates available at the hotel remember you still need to register to attend the Convention. To register please contact Charles Dean-Young at training@bafra.org.
Full details of the Convention and accommodation rates can be found in last week's Newsflash. Payment for rooms to be made to: BAFRA Ltd, 89 Smithfield Road Uttoxeter, ST14 7LD by 28th February.
Danish Speaker Confirmed
In recent years we have attracted many excellent speakers to our Convention and this year is no different with Bill LeMonnier, Referee from the Big Ten Conference, attending. However I am pleased to also announce that one of Denmark’s top Officials, Frank Kristensen, will also be coming along to give a few presentations. When we think of Denmark’s relationship with American Football the name Morten Andersen, former Kicker for the New Orleans Saints (and many other teams), usually springs to mind. Frank may not be as well known in football circles however he is a respected Official of many years
standing having worked games all over the world under the EFAF and IFAF banner. Frank also has an excellent web site which contains various training material, newsletter, etc at www.whitecap.dk.
To our new Members
The Convention is open to all our members and entrance is free. It’s a great opportunity to meet Officials from all over the UK and please be assured you will be made very welcome. You will also gain considerably from the presentations and Break-out sessions we have arranged. If you need any additional information contact me directly or talk to your trainer or local officials
Programme of Events
The Convention Programme is taking shape and should be completed within the next couple of weeks. Again we have included a total of 8 different Break-out sessions, covering a variety of topics, which everyone will be able to attend. There will also be plenty of game film to review and a presentation on Rules and Mechanics changes.

REMAINING BUAFL REGULAR SEASON ASSIGNMENTS
As you will be aware, I am not standing for re-election at the AGM in March. Before Christmas the board put out a request for anyone interested in the role to come forward and 2 potential candidates have emerged.
In order for them to experience the role before finally making a decision about standing for election, they are managing the assignments for the remainder of the BUAFL season. We should be publishing these on Sunday afternoon.
I am still managing all email and communications through the operations email address and will handle any scheduling queries with the 2 potential candidates.

QUALIFIED STATUS
Congratulations to James Meredith who has completed all of the requirements to become a qualified official.
Thanks to Chris Jarvis and others involved in his training.

DIRECTORS ELECTIONS
This is a reminder that elections for the Board of Directors will take place at this year’s AGM which will be held on the Saturday of the Convention. There are five posts up for election this year. Four of these become vacant on the two year cycle. These are:
Director of Finance
The current incumbent, Andrew Lovell, has indicated he will be standing for re-election;
Director of Operations
The current incumbent, Pete Johnson, has indicated he will not be standing for re-election;
Director of Recruitment
The current incumbent, Ben Griffiths, has indicated he will not be standing for re-election;
Director without Portfolio #2
The current incumbent, Steve Tonkinson, has indicated he will be standing for re-election.
There is also one post up for election because the present incumbent was appointed not elected:
Director of Training
The present incumbent, Charles Dean-Young, has indicated he will be standing for election.
Nomination forms will be e-mailed to all qualified members by Saturday 29th January. If any qualified member does not receive their papers by then they should let me know immediately (although please check you spam box first). Please note that associate and affiliate members are not entitled to nominate or stand for election, so will not receive papers. Whilst all posts are open to all qualified members, it is particularly important that nominations are received for the two posts where the incumbents are not seeking re-election.
In addition, there will be papers included for resolutions to be voted upon at the AGM. These must relate to the Articles of Association, Memorandum of Association or the Regulations. All directors will be available for questioning about their areas of responsibility and these issues need not be submitted as resolutions. However, if possible, notice of a question to be asked will ensure the fullest possible answer.
Please note that whilst only qualified members may submit resolutions and vote, all members of the Association are welcome to attend the AGM and may ask questions of the Directors. Further details of the AGM will appear nearer the time.

Glasgow Tigers |
No team box marked, no hashmarks at sideline, no numbers or 9 yard marks. Henry Richardson #25 |
30/01/11 v UWS Pyros |
|
Leeds Celtics |
No Assistants were available at the start of the game, therefore the Leeds coaching staff had to work the chains and ball persons. After 10 minutes of the game starting the assistants arrived and had to be instructed. At half time 1 of the assistants changed again. Chris Jarvis #10 |
27/02/11 v Manchester Tyrants |
|
Outstanding items from previous weeks |
||
|
Portsmouth Destroyers |
No hash marks on one side line - centre hash marks not aligned very well - Some lines not straight - Goal posts on endline but cross bar over hang into the endzone. During a measurement on far sideline for a ball that looked close to a first down, the ball was found to be about 4 yards past the chains. At this point that we realised that the field was not square and on the far side there were 8 yards between each 5 yard lines (from the 20 yard line in at one end). This was the reason why the hash marks are not marked on the far side of the field. Dave Knight #135 |
06/02/10 v Solent Redhawks |
|
UWE Bullets |
The only markings on the field were in Gaffa tape, two lines across the field marking the endzones and a piece of tape every 5 yards along the sidelines. Plaudits to both teams, for playing a good game, in a sportsmanlike conduct. Attitudes of both the players & coaching staff were excellent Scott Silver #105 |
13/02/10 v Bristol Barracuda |
|
KCL Regents |
NFL hashmarks. Home team provided only two footballs; Imperial supplied a third (with no white stripes). No private shower or toilet. Alan Dobson #308 |
20/02/10 v Kent Falcons |
|
Imperial Immortals |
The game was played on a Rugby Union field. The only football markings of any description were short hashmarks on one sideline. The position of the other sideline and the goal lines were marked with flour. Because of this arrangement, the goalposts were not in the middle of the end line. The position of the inbounds lines was marked by a tackle bag and a box positioned off the field at one end.
Footballs old and badly worn. A changing room was not provided until about 30 minutes after the first official's arrival at the ground; no private shower or toilet. Chain crew was changed multiple times and was of variable quality. Alan Dobson #308 |
06/02/11 v Reading Knights |
|
South Bank Spartans |
South Bank's field was declared unplayable by ground staff early in the week; BNU very kindly agreed to switch the game, so this report refers to BNU's facilities.
80-yard field with 7-yard end zones. The field is on a clearly-defined slope from one end to the other. Several holes were discovered on the field, which were filled with sand.
The poles that hold the chain are made of soft plastic and bend when attempting to pull the chain taut; care must be taken to ensure that sufficient pressure is exerted on the chain to fully tauten it.
No private shower or toilet. Changing room only accessible via team changing area; however, drinks and refreshments were provided by game management. Alan Dobson #308 |
13/02/11 v Greenwich Mariners |
|
Sheffield Sabres |
Field was a combination of white lines and Red lines marked on a Rugby pitch, Some White Rugby markings were very close to Red American Football Markings. No 6 ft coaching line marked, no 12ft team areas marked, used Rugby Touchline at approx 15 feet. There were no numbers (& no 9 yard marks) and no 10 yard markers which made locating spots on the field difficult. After the game officials had to share changing room with players. Ben Griffiths #228 |
13/02/11 v Leeds Carnegie |
|
Oxford Panthers |
90 yard field, numbers too close to sidelines. Chain Crew provided very close to kick off and changed at half time. Only 1 ball boy in second half. Team areas not properly marked but players stayed well off the sidelines none-the-less. Changing room was locked after the game, Oxford were very helpful in getting it re-opened though. Dean Wright #553 |
06/02/11 v Southampton Stags |
|
Greenwich Mariners |
Nice 3rd generation astroturf field, but the endzones were too small. Both teams agreed to play with the small endzones and a 90yd field. No hash marks, no numbers, no 9yd marks, no coaches boxes, no team boxes. Only 1 football supplied by visiting team. Down box numbers keep slipping and showing the wrong down. One stake of the chain set broken in a previous game, held together by tape. Steve Tonkinson #99 |
30/01/11 v Royal Holloway Bears |
|
BNU Buccaneers |
80 yard field, 7 yard end zones, coaching/team areas marked with cones, NFL-style hashmarks, game started 10 minutes late due to late arrival of ambulance. Brian Yates #29 |
13/02/2011 v Royal Holloway Bears |
|
Coventry University Jets |
Plaudits to both teams , who played a hard game on a difficult pitch. Both teams had incomplete strips, and only two balls supplied. Game finished 0-0 and overtime was not possible because the pitch was freezing again, both coaches agreed. Charlie Dean Young #258 |
06/02/11 v Warwick Wolves |
|
Kent Falcons |
Some of the hash marks between the 40 yard lines were almost 2 yards apart which meant that whilst the field was marked out as a 90 yard field, the actual length was probably 95 yards or more. Will Marriage #293 |
13/02/11 v Brighton Tsunami |
|
Tarrannau Aberystwyth |
Game was played at Birmingham University's 3G pitch which only had one set of goalposts, resulting in all offence being played towards one end. Game started 10 minutes late due to late arrival of ambulance. Amir Brooks #593 |
13/02/11 v Staffordshire Stallions |
|
Canterbury Chargers |
Kickoff was delayed by 15 minutes due to late arrival of ambulance. Field markings were in blue on a rugby pitch with white markings. Over half the yard lines marked were so faint as to be practically invisible and many were crooked. No team areas, 9-yard marks or hashmarks either at sideline or on the middle of the field, making measurements impossible. Changing rooms were locked for 15 minutes after end of game whilst a key was found. Crew not paid. Tim Ockendon #481 |
30/01/2011 v Kent Falcons |
|
Note: it is possible that any game may be cancelled, or any team may arrange additional games. Any dates mentioned here are intended only as a guide. |

PLAY OF THE WEEK:

|
|
New this week |
Play:
A's ball on B's 4, 3rd and
3. QB A12 runs the option and pitches the ball backward to A22.
A22 muffs the ball and the ball rolls into B's end zone. Both Team
A and Team B players assume an incomplete forward pass and do not
try to recover the ball. After a while, the officials blow the
ball dead.

|
Previous week's play |
Play: A's ball on B's 22, 3rd and 10. Back A37 takes a pitchout and runs near the sideline for a touchdown. During the run, when A37 was on B's 5, End A87 held B34 in B's end zone. Ruling?
Ruling: The clock was stopped for the touchdown. The end of the run and the basic enforcement spot is B's goal line. The spot of the foul is in advance of the basic enforcement spot. The 10-yard penalty is enforced from B's goal line. A's ball on B's 10, 1st and 10. The clock starts on the snap. |
