ELITE TRAINING DAY

The number of officials who have signed up for a place at this year's Elite Programme Training Day, which will be held on Saturday 17th September at the Coventry Hill Hotel (the same venue as the 2011 BAFRA Convention), now numbers over 20, so if you are thinking of attending, there are only a few spaces left.

All Officials who have been selected for the programme are expected to attend (however it is appreciated that some people will not be able to do so due to holidays, work or other commitments). Thanks to all who have responded so far. If you are one of the remaining few who have not yet done so, please e-mail epcoordinator@bafra.org to let me know whether or not you will be attending.

The meeting is open to all BAFRA members who would like to take advantage of the training carried out on the day. However, spaces are limited, so please let me know ASAP if you want to come along. Last year's Elite Training Day attracted a high attendance from a wide spectrum of members, and this year's looks to be of a similar calibre

Further details and an agenda will follow in next week's edition of Newsflash and will also be e-mailed to every member who has confirmed attendance.

NEXT HOME GAME

New this week

London Olympians

Game played at Well Hall, Eltham on a 3G surface principally used for soccer. Field

markings were faint. There were lines across the field but they were in metres. Ten yard tick marks were placed on the sidelines with tape. No limit lines, team areas, coaching boxes, or inbounds lines; but cones were placed beyond the end lines to mark where the inbounds lines should have been laterally, no three yard marks.

Exeter Tornados

Associate game. Medical cover was excellent as used for training exercise. Field was council-run so team forced to mark-out. Team was still marking field upon arrival so guidance given to meet a minimum standard. Officials Assts were constantly being changed throughout, though not due to poor performance. Teams & officials waited 15mins for changing rooms to be opened.

END ZONE

PLAY OF THE WEEK:

New this week

Play: A's ball, 4th and 12, on A's 25. A8's punt is illegally touched by A87 on B's 39, muffed by B56 on B's 37 and then recovered by A88 on B's 36. B76 blocks A84 in the back on B's 33 before the kick ends. Ruling?
Ruling?

Last week

Play: A's ball, 4th and 14, on B's 46. A6 punts. A44 is standing on B's 1. The kick touches the ground on B's 5 and bounces toward B's end zone. A44 reaches into B's end zone where the kick has crossed the goal line and recovers the kick, bringing the ball back into the field of play to where he is standing on B's 1. The ball does not touch the ground in B's end zone. Ruling?

Ruling: The ball becomes dead when A44 gains possession of the ball. The position of the ball governs and not the position of A44. A44 touched the ball after the ball broke the plane of B's goal line. Illegal touching in B's end zone. Team B will accept the touchback. Team B does not have the option to take the ball on B's 1 since the ball became dead before the ball returned to the field of play. B's ball, 1st and 10, on B's 20.

MECHANICS:

New this week

Game Situation: On a 4 man crew on a punt play, the Linejudge often ends up a long way from the end of the kick. How can the ball boy be instructed before the game to help the Linjudge in this regard?
Answer next issue...

Last week

Game Situation: 1st and 10 at A's 4 yard line. On a 7 man crew, how should the two wing officials work together to ensure that team A's goal line is covered?
Answer: M-13-5. The Linejudge has primary responsibility for Team A's goal line if the ball is snapped from on or inside Team A's 7 yard line, the Linesman has the same if the ball is snapped on or inside the 2 yard line. In this case the Linejudge should move to cover the goal line. This can be remembered from the fact that the Linesman must be ready to move 5 yards downfield if he reads pass (M-13-4-b-2). Since he has coverage responsibilities downfield he has a reduced area within which he must cover the goal line.
