BRITBOWL XXVI

Thanks to everyone who has responded to the BritBowl email sent out earlier this week. The response has been great so far. However we still need more volunteers to work as the Officials Assistants and people to work Flag and 5 on 5 kitted games. So please call or drop me an email if you need more information before making a decision. We really do need as many people as possible to help out.

PLAUDITS

1. To Manchester Titans game management and Staffordshire Surge for making the game possible and good communication with officials to ensure a minimum field standard could be met

2. To Chester Romans and DC Presidents for a game played in excellent spirit. Especially "Uncle Sam" the DC Mascot - you made the day quite colourful. Best wishes to your injured guys - hope they made the trip home with you and manage to recover as quickly and as safely as possible

REPORT

NEXT HOME GAME

New this week

Watford Cheetahs

No nine-yard marks or numbers. No limit lines. Changing rooms not lockable.

Pete Parsons #321

15/07/12 v Maidstone Pumas

East Kent Mavericks

When the crew arrived the field was completely unmarked. Plaudits to the Mavericks game management for getting the pitch marked sufficiently well for the game to proceed without too much confusion in the little time available. Sidelines were both crooked, one quite badly and some main lines did not intersect with the hashmarks that had been marked separately. Team area lines and coaching lines were at the wrong depth and no limit lines.

Tim Ockendon #481

14/07/12 v South Wales Warriors

Birmingham Bulls Junior

The start of the game was delayed 30 mins awaiting the arrival of the ambulance as the minimum medical provisions by rule were not met. This led to a delay of 30 mins to the start of the subsequent senior fixture between the Birmingham Bulls and the Doncaster Mustangs

Colin Edwards #76

Unknown

Manchester Titans

Due to inclement weather, normal field changed to a 3G venue at very short notice. Home team had to mark the field 1 hour before kickoff and (in agreement with the Referee) marked only mandatory field markings and team areas. Consequently, no sideline hash marks, three yard marks or limit lines.

Field also had no posts so with agreement of both head coaches in accordance with BAFA Rules, game was played as a no kicking game. Game was also shortened by agreement of both head coaches. Four quarters played of equal (shortened length). But - game WAS played!

Mike Cavanagh #465

22/07/12 v Sheffield Predators

Outstanding items from previous weeks

London Warriors Junior

Ambulance was late and delayed kick off for 30 minutes. The hash marks were marked out according to NFL specification. Coaches' box marked out only to the 30 yard lines.

Dean Wright #553

15/07/12 v London Blitz Junior

South London Renegades

Played a Streatham & Croydon RFC but on the far pitch from the stand rather than the near one which is usually used. Main lines marked unevenly approximately every 5 metres resulting in a pitch than claimed to be 85 metres long and was in fact around 93 yards. As a result both coaches were informed that the chains would be definitive and all penalties were marched off manually. Multiple crooked lines including both sidelines and endlines that took slight detours around the posts. Inbounds lines unevenly spaced and no hashmarks at either sideline. No numbers, 9-yard marks, team area lines or limit lines. All markings were faint and worsened as the game progressed under the poor weather conditions.

Tim Ockendon #481

22/07/12 v East Kent Mavericks Juniors

East Kent Mavericks

Sidelines were both crooked, one quite badly. In one half of the field the main yard lines had been marked every 4 yards rather than every five. Plaudits to the Mavericks game management for obscuring the incorrect lines and replacing them with lines in the correct position sufficiently well for the game to proceed without too much confusion. No team area line or limit lines. Several areas at one end of the field needed repair prior to kickoff.

Tim Ockendon #481

14/07/12 v South Wales Warriors

Crewe Railroaders

Very small officials changing rooms, although game management were very attentive in providing hot drinks and biscuits - thank you. Grass field surface had several filled in large holes.

Game was played in a multi sport facility, a throwing surface encroached into end zone by 4 yards, presenting a tripping hazard, and incomplete end line. Game Management agreed to cover the throwing surface and paint an new end line

Andrew Lovell #559

22/07/12 v Staffordshire Surge

DC Presidents

Plaudits to the DC Presidents Game Management. Officials had allocated parking spots, were greeted upon arrival and lead to the changing room where food and drink was provided. Game balls were in room ready, and officials were paid before the commencement of the game. Overall, one of the best game day management experiences the crew has had, with the welcome and general game day support bringing praise from all of us!

Mark Snow #430

22/07/12 v Lincolnshire Bombers

Bristol Apache

Ball person did not return for the second half. Team areas marked between 30 yard lines. No numbers marked on field.

Mike LeFevre #341

14/07/12 v Oxford Saints

Shropshire Revolution

KO delayed by 45 minutes as no ambulance present and sole medic obtained splints and stretcher for medical equipment to be meet by rule. Chain crew changed at half time

Andrew Lovell #559

08/07/12 v Lancashire Wolverines

END ZONE

PLAY OF THE WEEK:

New this week

Play: A's ball on A's 34, 4th and 7. A4's punt is blocked. The ball is rolling on A's 6 when A4 bats the ball through A's end zone. Ruling?
Ruling?

Last week

Play: A's ball, free kick, on A's 30. B22 muffs the ball on B's 6 and the ball rolls into B's end zone. To prevent A38 from recovering the ball, B22 bats the ball across the end line. Ruling?
Ruling: B's ball, 1st and 10, on B's 20. Postscrimmage kick enforcement is not applicable since this is a free kick. The basic enforcement spot is the previous spot. Team A could accept the penalty and rekick from the A40. Team A will probably be content with the touchback and decline the penalty.

MECHANICS:

New this week

Game Situation: 1st and 10, the ball is at the team A's 30 yard line. Quarterback A4 drops back into the pocket to look for an open receiver. He is pursued by Defensive End B90 and is about to throw a legal forward pass as B90 makes legal contact with him. During B90's subsequent tackle of A4, the ball comes out of the Quarterback's grasp. The Referee is well-positioned to see the action, but is not completely sure if A4 began to throw the pass as the ball came out. The ball lands behind A4 and a defender falls on it. No other official has a view on the action. Ruling?
Answer next issue...

Last week

Play: On a 6 or 7 man crew, which officials should escort the team captains into the centre of the field for the coin toss?
Ruling: M-8-4-3-b. The Referee and Umpire shall take up position in the centre of the field. The Field Judge and Side Judge shall escort their respective captains on to the field and introduce them to the Referee. Once they have done this they should retreat to join the remaining officials. It is a good idea for the Side and Field Judge to agree how they will retreat from the field, so that one does not jog backwards while the other turns around and walks off.
